The annual RAG concert at Kirstenbosch Gardens provides a wonderful opportunity for families and students in the
afternoon of music in a beautiful setting. This concert was started 7 years ago and has traditionally featured the Soweto String Quartet as the headline act. 100% of the profits of this event go to RAG’s beneficiary, SHAWCO. SHAWCO provides both medical and education programs to the under privileged communities of Cape Town, and is the largest student-run NGO in the world.
The RAG team organise the concert, drawing on over 80 students to assist in the planning, coordinating and running of the event. The 2008 concert aims to grow the concept to cater for a more diverse audience, providing a showcase of music, both old and new, both South African and international. This concert will include the following performers: the UCT Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Richard Cock and featuring the Bala Brothers (Zwai, Loyiso and Phelo) along with the UCT Choir. The popular Cape Town based band Plush will play, and will perform a collaboration with the orchestra on a few pieces. The entire concert will be opened by the winner of a ‘battle of the bands’ type competition, called Launch Your Band. This is open to any and all bands in the Cape Town region. The 2007 winner of the competition, Palms Up, has gone on to release a successful CD.
Through the artists mentioned above, the concert is aimed at both students and families, from Granny to toddler. Old Mutual have kindly come on board as the headline sponsor, a partnership continued from 2007.”
