Floats Parade

Date: 28 March 2009

Venue: Adderley Street

Time: 12:00

Better known in Cape Town as “The RAG”, this vibrant event will be showcasing for the 84th time in 2009. The purpose of the UCT RAG floats parade is to raise a substantial amount of revenue for SHAWCO, whilst serving the greater Cape Town Community. UCT residence students build colourful and really intriguing structures, which are then placed on the back of flatbed trucks and paraded through Adderley Street. Residence students dress up to the theme and together with various other performers, providing the crowd with loads of entertainment.

The event publicizes the name of UCT RAG and SHAWCO to the Community and raises awareness of what these organisations strive for. It also provides a means of publicity for sponsors and partners alike as the event takes place in the busy city center.

Within the UCT residences, the project also offers substantial development opportunities to students getting heavily involved with design, planning and building of their residence float. The process alone takes place over a grand total of 4 weeks before the parade, with the final assembly and rounding off happening at a vibrant building night on campus the night before the parade.
