UCT RAG Corporate Newsletter 2006/2007

A successful 2006/2007 for the University of

Cape Town’s RAG Organisation has come to an end! The incomes from UCT RAG’s fundraising activities managed to exceed the original aim of 1.3 million rand for the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest student run organization, SHAWCO. SHAWCO’s mission statement is “to improve the quality of life of individuals in developing communities within the

Cape

Metropolitan area.” RAG has managed to complete this feat through a series of student-organized events that were made possible by sponsorships from a number of companies, the support of the UCT student body and the involvement of the greater

Cape Town community.  O WEEKVarious Orientation Week activities are carried out for non-residence students. This is RAG’s way of welcoming first year students to the most enriching years of their lives. Months of preparation go into making this the most exciting week for first years on campus. Events this year included a brand party, the hugely popular Big Bash and a tour of the

Cape

Peninsula.
SAX APPEALSAX Appeal is an annual magazine produced by RAG. SAX Appeal sales contribute the largest part of RAG’s income. This year, in accordance with SAX Appeal tradition, Tens of Thousands of magazines were sold by hundreds of students in a variety of eye catching outfits. The theme this year was “James Bond 007”. The students spent the day reminding motorists to Remember And Give by urging them to buy copies of SAX Appeal. Pick ’n’ Pay expressed their philanthropies by sponsoring the production of SAX Appeal, and thereby furthering this 40 year old tradition. BIG BASHThe Big Bash is possibly the biggest event of the RAG O-Week calendar and, as always, it was a success this year. It is the largest music festival in the Southern Hemisphere.  Over 7000 people spent the night enjoying the diverse selection of music which included artists such as HHP, Love Jones and Fistaz Mixwell. Castle Lager was the headline sponsor of this, the most exhilarating student party of the year, held at Ratanga Junction.

OLYMPICSTen days after Big Bash, the Olympics commenced on Jameson plaza. This was a fun event that drew a great number of students. It was an opportunity to increase student support of RAG and was sponsored by Nedbank. The Olympics included events such as trolley races, stair races and Miller urban golf.  FLOATSThe floats procession is a tradition that allows the mixing of students and residents of the greater

Cape area. This is RAG biggest effort to encourage the involvement of the Capetonian public. The event captures the very essence of RAG: provision of fun filled events with the purpose of generating funds that will be of help to the community itself. The theme this year was “great inventions” and, as always, this year’s floats procession did not fail to deliver an exhilarating day.
 SSQ AT KIRSTENBOSCHThis year,

Kirstenbosch

Gardens formed the picturesque backdrop of an unforgettable evening. Crowds were serenaded by the lively tunes of the Soweto String Quartet. This was an event that catered to people from various backgrounds with a common appreciation for music. The event, which in 2008 will be known as the Kirstenbosch Concert, also included a performance from the winners of the Launch Your Band promotion - Palms Up. This evening of exquisite culture was sponsored by Old Mutual.

FASHION MONTHFashion show is all about, well, fashion. This was an opportunity for young designers and models to showcase their talent. Fashion Month included the designer competition, the dance off and the model search, which was sponsored by BOSS Models. The month culminated in the grand finale, The Fashion Show. The V & A Waterfront was the headline sponsor of this trendy event. Guests and participants indulged in the glitz and glamour of the V & A Waterfront’s Workshop 17.  DIARIESA diary is an essential tool for every student. The RAG diary is the official UCT student diary and contains important information such as the “101 list of things to do before you leave UCT”, comic strips, timetables and a basic guideline on how to survive life on a student budget! The headline sponsor for this year’s diary was Nedbank. GOLF DAYGolf day is one of RAG’s corporate events and was held at Rondebosch Golf Club. It’s a fun-filled day of networking and provides an opportunity for most of RAG’s sponsors to interact on an interpersonal level.

RAG would like to thank their sponsors for helping to bring about yet another successful RAG year.
